Gary Croft has joined the fortunately rather small ranks of injured at Portman Road. The former Grimsby and Blackburn player injured his hip in last night's reserve game.

Town's current standing at the top of the Fair Play League may lead to an early start to 2000/01. Should Town win the Fair Play League they will be invited to enter the Intertoto Cup which can begin as early as June. Last year Bradford and Aston Villa entered the trophy which can lead to UEFA Cup entry. So far Town have received just eight bookings this season with John McGreal the greatest individual transgressor with just two bookings. There have been no players sent off so far this year.

The Verheyen affair trundles on this morning with Town chairman David Sheepshanks reacting angrily to claims that Club Brugge are set to report Town to FIFA. The Belgians say Town have made an illegal approach for Verheyen by talking to the player without his club's permission which is an offence under FIFA rules. The Town chairman said: "We are not aware of any charge or any wrong-doing on our part. We have had a friendly discussion with the managing director of Brugge over the last few weeks but recognise that they are unwilling sellers and unhappy about the way the situation has developed. I cannot comment further."

As expected Town have made an improved offer to Club Brugge for Gert Veheyen. The Blues are rumoured to have bid a figure nearer to the £2 million now thought to be Club Brugge price for the player. George Burley said of the new developments: "We have put in an improved offer and must now wait and see what happens. Brugge don't want to lose Verheyen. He is their captain, a regular international and a good player."

Town will be without both Mark Venus and Marcus Stewart for tonight's crunch second leg Worthington Cup match with Millwall. Town's Saturday goal hero Marcus Stewart has a groin strain, while Venus is suffering from a strained hamstring.

Town skipper Matt Holland is expected to be fit for tomorrow's home game with Aston Villa. The 171 consecutive appearance man has had ice packs on his ankle since Wednesday's game with Leicester and they seem to have done the trick.

Town skipper Matt Holland is still hopeful that he will be fit for Saturday's game with Sunderland. The man who has made 169 consecutive appearances has taken to paddling in the sea in order to reduce the pain and swelling from the ankle injury caused by a wayward Gary Neville tackle on Tuesday

Town fell to defeat in their first game back in the Premiership, although it was not all bad news for George Burley’s men. The Blues lined up with new signing Hermann Hreidarsson lining up in the middle of a back three with Titus Bramble to his right and Mark Venus to his left. Up front David Johnson partnered Marcus Stewart who started despite the rumours yesterday, with James Scowcroft, Jim Magilton and Matt Holland in midfield. The wing backs were Gary Croft and Jamie Clapham.

Town new signing John Scales is facing a fitness test if he is to be fit for Saturday's game. Scales suffered a thigh injury in last week's game with Fiorentina. He has missed training several times this week, but manager George Burley is confident he will be OK: "Hopefully it will settle down in time, John won't want to miss out against his old club."

Two David Johnson goals in the first half gave Town another win in a game which petered out towards the end of the second half. Johnny Bosman scored Alkmaar's second half reply.
